Bison Football Players Celebrate Coaching Stability Ahead of Playoffs

North Dakota State University’s football team expressed relief this week following the announcement that head coach Tim Polasek signed a seven-year extension. The decision comes just in time for the playoffs, easing concerns about potential coaching changes within the program. Sophomore receiver Jackson Williams highlighted the optimism in the locker room, stating, “There was a fear of what if but good thing we don’t have to worry about that right now. I think the future is bright here.”

With a first-round bye secured as the No. 1 seed in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), the Bison are set to host their next playoff game on December 2, 2023, at noon at Gate City Bank Field in the Fargodome. They will face the winner of the matchup between Illinois State and Southeastern Louisiana, which takes place on Saturday.

Polasek’s extension came amid speculation that he was a candidate for head coaching positions at Oregon State and Colorado State. Those positions have since been filled, with JaMarcus Shephard hired at Oregon State and Jim Mora named head coach at Colorado State. Williams commented on the stability this extension brings, emphasizing that it demonstrates the program’s ability to compete with top-tier schools.

The dynamics of college football have shifted, with fewer coaching changes occurring after the season ends. The early signing period begins on November 29, 2023, and the transfer portal opens on January 2, 2024. Williams noted the challenging landscape, saying, “It’s a cut-throat world in college football. Things happen. Things change. There’s so much change every year…I just feel like the culture here is able to withstand that better than any other place.”

Bison linebacker and team captain Nathaniel Staehling echoed this sentiment, stating that the players were focused on their current responsibilities rather than external rumors. “We like to concern ourselves with what is happening at the moment. We’re a tight-knit group and we like to focus on what we can do now,” he explained.

In preparation for the upcoming game, the team has emphasized the development of younger players during practice sessions leading up to the Thanksgiving break. Staehling mentioned that reinforcing fundamentals is a priority for the older players, ensuring that the team maintains depth and readiness. “We want to get those younger guys the reps that they need so we can continue to develop our depth,” he said.

The Bison previously faced Illinois State earlier this season, securing a 33-16 victory in October. Polasek indicated that the coaching staff would pay particular attention to Southeastern Louisiana, given that they are more familiar with Illinois State’s game style.

As the playoffs approach, the Bison will resume practice on Saturday evening after the matchup is determined. They are focused on maintaining their momentum and preparing for the next challenge. Polasek emphasized the importance of clear communication and honesty within the team. “Just to be able to look people in the eyes and say, guys, we’re good. That means so much to me,” he said, adding, “Now we’ll be talking about Bison football and Bison football players.”
