Brooks Bakko Leads Kindred Vikings to Unbeaten Start in Basketball

KINDRED, N.D. — In a commanding performance, Brooks Bakko scored 35 points to lead the Kindred Vikings to a decisive victory against Fargo Oak Grove. The 6-foot-6 guard showcased his athleticism with a powerful two-handed dunk during the game, energizing the crowd at the Vikings’ gymnasium. This impressive display contributed to Kindred’s perfect record, improving their overall standing to 8-0 and 3-0 in North Dakota Division A, Region 1 boys basketball.

Bakke’s versatility has been instrumental to the Vikings’ success this season. He has averaged a double-double with approximately 28 points and 10 rebounds per game, leading the team in scoring by nearly 100 points. His ability to adapt to different matchups has made him a pivotal player. “Whatever you need me to do,” Bakko remarked. “If I got a (big guy) on me, I’ll go out and play point. If I got a smaller guy, I’ll play center.”

The impact of Bakko’s skills extends beyond individual statistics. His playmaking ability creates opportunities for his teammates, allowing for a more dynamic offensive strategy. Guard Gabe Whipple noted, “He frees up so many opportunities for our other guys, who will cut or get open for a three. That opens up a lot of looks for the whole board.” The Vikings currently average over 77 points per game, shooting at an impressive 50% from the field and 33% from three-point range.

Head coach Brad Woehl emphasized Bakko’s leadership qualities both on and off the court. “He still remains humble, and he’s very unselfish. He gets the ball to where it needs to go,” Woehl commented. “He’s all about winning, and that’s good to have from your leader.”

Bakko’s competitive spirit is not limited to basketball. He also made waves on the football field, receiving NCAA Division I FBS offers from prestigious programs such as Michigan, Michigan State, and Oklahoma. Last season, he was named the North Dakota Gatorade Player of the Year after racking up 778 yards and 13 touchdowns. His experience in football has influenced his style of play in basketball, where he often executes no-look passes to teammates. “A lot of it comes from football, just reading guys and moving them with your eyes,” Bakko explained.

As the Vikings continue their unbeaten streak, the team recognizes the importance of building on their momentum. Woehl stated, “It’s a process of us just getting better and better, and going 1-0 on game night.” The Vikings face a challenging week ahead, with matches against Central Cass on January 20, Devils Lake on January 23, and Four Winds-Minnewaukan on January 24. Each game is crucial for maintaining their winning streak.

“Just keep stacking days, games,” Bakko said. “Just trying to be the best team that we can.” Despite their strong offensive performance, Whipple noted the need for improvement on defense. “Offensively, we’re scoring the ball well. Defensively, we can clean some little things up.”

As the season progresses, the Kindred Vikings, led by Bakko, are poised to continue their pursuit of excellence on the court.
