Catawba Triumphs Over Lenoir-Rhyne, Ends Five-Game Losing Streak

Catawba College’s men’s basketball team secured a significant victory against Lenoir-Rhyne University, winning 87-78 at Goodman Arena on January 24, 2024. This victory marked an important turnaround for the Indians, who had experienced a five-game losing streak against the Bears, including a previous loss of 75-71 in December 2023. With this win, both teams are now tied for second place in the South Atlantic Conference, trailing Anderson University, which holds a 12-1 record in the league.

Catawba improved its season record to 15-4, including an impressive 10-3 in the conference, while remaining undefeated at home with a record of 9-0. The game drew a supportive crowd of 414 fans, adding to the home-court advantage. Despite shooting only 39 percent from the field, Catawba’s success came from a strong performance beyond the arc, as the team made 11 three-pointers. In contrast, Lenoir-Rhyne, with a season record of 16-5 and a conference mark of 10-3, managed to shoot slightly better overall but made only three three-pointers throughout the game.

The turnover battle proved to be pivotal, with Catawba holding a decisive 17-10 advantage. The Indians took a 13-point lead into halftime, but Lenoir-Rhyne mounted a comeback, tying the game at 68 with five minutes remaining. Catawba regained momentum when Ibra Athie converted two crucial free throws, followed by Jordan Simpson scoring back-to-back baskets, including a three-pointer that extended the lead to five points.

Carson Daniel emerged as a standout player, scoring 24 points, including four three-pointers, showcasing a breakout performance as a sophomore from Central Cabarrus. Jordan Simpson mirrored his teammate’s scoring output with 24 points, also sinking five three-pointers. Athie, despite struggling with shooting accuracy, contributed significantly with 14 rebounds alongside his 14 points. Justin Banks, although he scored only six points, made his presence felt defensively with four blocks.

On the opposing side, Blessin Kimble led Lenoir-Rhyne with 19 points. Following this match, Catawba’s upcoming game against Lincoln Memorial has been rescheduled from Saturday to Friday due to weather concerns.
