Cowboys Release Trevon Diggs After Flight Incident and Rehab Issues

The Dallas Cowboys released Trevon Diggs on December 26, 2023, following a series of issues that culminated in the former Pro Bowl cornerback missing a flight home after a game against the Washington Commanders. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer clarified that this incident was part of a broader set of concerns regarding Diggs’ commitment to the team.

Flight Incident and Team Protocols

After the Cowboys secured a 30-23 victory in Washington, Diggs spoke with Schottenheimer about remaining in the area to spend time with family for Christmas. The request was denied, and when Diggs opted not to board the team flight home, it contributed to the decision to release him. Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of team unity, stating, “We fly up together as a team and we return as a team,” which aligns with protocols he has enforced throughout his coaching career.

While the missed flight was a factor in Diggs’ release, Schottenheimer insisted it was not the only reason. He pointed out that several players had similarly requested to travel separately but were declined. “This decision was not made because he chose to not get on a plane,” he reiterated. “It was not the only factor involved.” The Cowboys prioritize a cohesive team culture, with Schottenheimer noting that the aim is to build “the 53 strongest, most connected group of people.”

Rehab and Performance Issues

Diggs’ release also stemmed from his approach to rehabilitation following surgery on his left knee, where he opted to conduct recovery in South Florida rather than remain with the team. This decision led to the enforcement of a $500,000 de-escalation clause in his contract. The organization expressed dissatisfaction with his rehabilitation strategy after he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2023.

During the current season, Diggs had also shown reluctance regarding the defensive scheme implemented by coordinator Matt Eberflus, advocating for a shift towards more man-to-man coverage. His performance was further affected by a concussion from an at-home accident, which resulted in his placement on injured reserve due to complications with his right knee. Schottenheimer had previously indicated that Diggs needed to adhere to team protocols before being reinstated to the active roster.

In informing Diggs of his release, Schottenheimer expressed his respect for the player, stating, “When I look back on it, I really do like Trevon. I want what’s best for him.” He acknowledged that Diggs might not have agreed with some of the decisions made by the coaching staff, but he wished him well in future endeavors.

As of December 27, 2023, Diggs is eligible to be claimed off waivers by another team. Should he not be picked up, he would become a free agent. Schottenheimer mentioned he had communicated the decision with select players, indicating his openness to discuss any concerns. “My door is always open, and if they have questions or concerns, I would love to talk about it,” he said.

The Cowboys’ decision to part ways with Diggs reflects a commitment to maintaining a strong team dynamic, prioritizing adherence to established protocols and a unified approach as they continue their season.
