Donovan Dent Shines as UCLA Basketball Dominates USC

The UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team celebrated a significant victory on March 4, 2023, as they defeated the USC Trojans with an impressive performance from transfer player Donovan Dent. Dent scored 30 points, contributed seven assists, and recorded zero turnovers, showcasing his remarkable skills and revitalizing the team’s momentum. This victory improved UCLA’s record to 19-9 and 11-6 in the Big Ten Conference.

During a late August intrasquad scrimmage, Mick Cronin, head coach of the Bruins, had high hopes for Dent, who commanded attention with his impressive dribble moves and accurate shooting. Fast forward to the recent match against USC, and it appears Dent has finally found his rhythm again. “You know when you guys came to practice this summer?” Cronin remarked to the media post-game. “That’s the guy you saw.”

For much of the season, Dent struggled with injuries and confidence issues, which prevented him from replicating his summer form. He experienced brief moments of productivity, but nothing compared to his recent performances against both the No. 10 Illinois and USC, where he tallied a combined 44 points and 23 assists, again without committing a turnover. His ability to manipulate defenses and create scoring opportunities has not only reignited hope among his teammates but also reaffirmed Cronin’s faith in him.

Dent’s trainer, Shannon Sharpe, commented on Dent’s resurgence, stating, “He’s definitely in a better space. He’s kind of playing more freely and looks like he’s having fun out there.” Sharpe highlighted that early-season challenges stemmed from increased competition, expectations, and injuries, all of which weighed heavily on Dent’s performance. “When you’re the guy on the team, those wins and losses fall on your shoulders,” he added.

Cronin worked closely with Dent to address his shooting mechanics, which had been contributing to his struggles. Dent responded to Cronin’s encouragement to “get in the ring and throw punches,” leading to significant improvements in his game. As Dent found success, the camaraderie among the team strengthened, particularly following a chaotic period after a loss to Michigan State.

UCLA’s lineup has also seen changes, with Skyy Clark returning from injury. This addition enhances the Bruins’ three-guard setup, creating more space on the floor and allowing for a faster pace of play. Sharpe noted, “It kind of brings a faster pace, and I think that’s where Donny’s special.” The Bruins have effectively utilized guard-to-guard screens, making it challenging for defenses to anticipate Dent’s driving opportunities or assists.

With the team building chemistry both on and off the court, UCLA is poised for a strong finish to the season. As Cronin emphasized, “Nobody’s going anywhere in March without their best players playing well.” For Dent, maintaining his current form is crucial. “I’m hoping this groove continues,” he stated. “This is the best time of the year to find something.”

The Bruins are set to face the Minnesota Golden Gophers on March 11, 2023, at Williams Arena in Minneapolis, with hopes of extending their winning streak and solidifying their position in the upcoming postseason.
