LAFC Extends Contract for Defender Ryan Hollingshead Through 2027

The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) has announced a contract extension for defender Ryan Hollingshead, keeping him with the club until 2027. This decision comes as LAFC prepares for the upcoming Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup playoffs, which begin on October 25, 2023. Hollingshead’s continued presence will provide stability to a team that has undergone significant roster changes in recent years.

LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington expressed enthusiasm about the extension, stating, “We’re thrilled to have come to terms with Ryan on another extension. Ryan is a valued veteran and fully earned this extension through his consistency and team-first attitude. He leads by example, raises the standard every day, and delivers in big moments.”

Choosing not to enter free agency, Hollingshead’s new contract marks the club’s fourth extension since mid-September. The 34-year-old native of Granite Bay, California, played for UCLA from 2009 to 2012 and has been a crucial member of LAFC since joining the team. He has contributed to the club’s achievements, including an MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield, and U.S. Open Cup since 2022.

On the field, Hollingshead has established himself as one of the most prolific defenders in MLS history. He is tied for the second-most goals scored by a defensive player in the league’s history, with 31 goals. He leads all active defenders in this statistic, highlighting his dual role as both a defender and a goal-scorer. During the 2025 regular season, he added two goals and three assists across 31 appearances, marking his fourth consecutive year of participating in more than 30 MLS games.

Hollingshead’s contributions extend beyond his on-field performance. He was nominated for the 2025 Audi Goals Drive Progress Impact Award and was recognized as the MLS Works Humanitarian of the Year in 2017 while playing for FC Dallas. His commitment to community service and leadership on and off the field has made him a respected figure in the league.

Reflecting on his time with LAFC, Hollingshead noted the camaraderie within the team. “Our locker rooms for four straight years have just been unbeatable,” he stated in August. “The way the group competes together, the way the group fights for each other, it’s been something really special. I’m just grateful to be a part of it. You know in this sport and sports in general that this doesn’t last forever.”

As the playoffs approach, LAFC will look to leverage Hollingshead’s experience and leadership as they aim for further success in the postseason. The team is poised to build on its previous accomplishments and maintain a competitive edge in the league, thanks in part to the stability provided by veteran players like Hollingshead.
