Roy High School in Utah is fostering a sense of pride and community among its students through its innovative Teen Center and inclusive sports programs. The school, which has been recognized as FOX 13 News’ Cool School of the Week, is a vibrant hub where students feel valued and supported.
As students enter Roy High, the atmosphere is palpable, characterized by their school colors of black and gold. “I love Roy High because there are so many different people that come here,” said Ruby, a Student Body Officer. “It’s so diverse, and there’s something for everyone to do.” The school’s motto, “We R One,” is prominently displayed, reflecting the commitment to inclusivity that defines the student body.
Student leaders are actively promoting this ethos. “Everything we do here at Roy High is to include everybody,” said Aaron, the Student Body President, emphasizing the importance of community and belonging. Various student groups, such as Latinos in Action, focus on cultural education and service, aiming to ensure that every student feels they belong. “Our theme this year is actually ‘you belong,’ and we try to make sure everyone lives that out,” said the group’s president.
The Teen Center stands out as a vital resource for students needing additional support. This facility offers a community food pantry, snacks, showers, washing machines, and a kitchen. “It’s also just a safe space for them to be if they don’t have somewhere else they can go,” explained Ally, a Roy High student. The Teen Center serves as a refuge for students, ensuring they have access to essential resources.
Roy High also excels in promoting inclusive athletics through its Unified Sports program. This initiative allows students from different schools to compete in Special Olympics-style events. Basketball is a particular favorite among the participants. When asked about his favorite aspect of the sport, student-athlete Ian enthusiastically responded, “three pointers!” The cheerleaders and other athletes contribute to the dynamic atmosphere, fostering positivity on and off the court.
Recently, Taylor Mahe from Granite Credit Union acknowledged the school’s dedication to student support by presenting a donation for the Teen Center. Natalie East, associated with the Teen Center, highlighted the impact of this contribution: “This will help buy food and support all the families, have snacks for all the kids; we go through a lot of snacks.”
With its commitment to inclusivity and comprehensive support, Roy High School is setting a commendable example for educational institutions nationwide. The focus on community, culture, and wellness not only enriches student life but also enhances their educational experience.
