Trawlerman showcased his superiority in the staying division by winning the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot, leading a one-two finish for trainers John and Thady Gosden. The bay horse, owned by Godolphin, entered the race as the 5-6 favourite and executed a strategic ride under jockey William Buick, completing the two-mile course with a decisive performance.

Trawlerman maintained a steady pace throughout the race, expertly navigating the final bend before being urged to sprint away from his stablemate, Sweet William, who was ridden by Robert Havlin. Although Sweet William made a strong push, he could not close the gap, with Trawlerman finishing ahead by a length and a half. The third-place finisher, Al Qareem, trailed significantly, finishing 12 lengths behind.

Gosden Brothers Reflect on a Strong Performance

Following the race, John Gosden lauded both horses, noting their shared experience as seven- and six-year-olds. “They are two lovely horses,” he stated, emphasizing their status as “great staying horses” and integral members of his training family. Gosden highlighted Trawlerman’s relentless spirit, explaining, “When the others want to take a pull and a breather, that’s when he says ‘no, we’re going two miles and a proper gallop.'”

He acknowledged a moment of concern during the race, recalling, “There was a moment a furlong out I thought Sweet William might get him, but then he didn’t.” Gosden confirmed that both horses will be rested until next season, with plans for a race before the prestigious Gold Cup.

Philippa Cooper, who owns and bred Sweet William through her Normandie Stud, expressed mixed feelings about the outcome. “The plan was to put him asleep at the back,” she explained, admitting that expectations included interference from another competitor. Despite her hopes, Trawlerman proved too strong, demonstrating a slight edge in the final stretch.

Cooper reflected on the progress Sweet William has made, noting his improved performance and tenacity. “It’s probably a career best if you judge it on how close he got to Trawlerman,” she remarked. She also indicated that while she had initially considered retiring Sweet William, his competitive spirit suggests he will continue racing.

Trainer Karl Burke, responsible for the third-place finisher Al Qareem, praised his horse’s dedication. “He wears his heart on his sleeve and he always tries his best,” Burke stated. He acknowledged that Al Qareem’s performance, finishing 12 lengths behind Trawlerman, was commendable given the competition. “He’s an absolute star for the yard,” he added, confirming that Al Qareem would now be given a break after a demanding season.

The exciting finale of the Long Distance Cup not only highlighted the capabilities of Trawlerman but also demonstrated the fierce competitiveness of the staying division in British horse racing. As the season winds down, the anticipation builds for the next year’s encounters, particularly as both Trawlerman and Sweet William aim to return stronger than ever.
