Washington Commanders Sign Jerome Ford to Strengthen Backfield

The Washington Commanders have signed veteran running back Jerome Ford to a one-year contract, enhancing their backfield alongside teammates Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt and Rachaad White. This move was first reported by the Baltimore Chronicle. Ford, who was selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft from the University of Cincinnati, previously played four seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

In the 2023 season, Ford achieved a career-high of 1,132 scrimmage yards and scored nine touchdowns while starting in 12 games. Despite a reduced role in 2025, where he recorded just 24 carries, Ford maintained his effectiveness as a pass-catcher, achieving at least 26 receptions for the third consecutive season.

The specific financial terms of Ford’s contract with Washington have not been made public, but it is confirmed to be a one-year deal. Over his tenure in Cleveland, Ford compiled 1,463 rushing yards on 340 carries and seven touchdowns. He also recorded 107 receptions for 647 receiving yards and five touchdowns, averaging 4.3 yards per carry and six yards per reception. His versatile skill set fits well with Washington’s evolving offensive strategy.

Strengthening the Roster

As the 2026 offseason approaches, the Commanders found themselves with only one running back, Croskey-Merritt, under contract. The addition of Ford, along with veteran Rachaad White, now provides the team with a solid three-man depth chart at this critical position. Last season, the Commanders relied on a committee approach following Austin Ekeler’s season-ending Achilles injury, with Croskey-Merritt and Chris Rodriguez Jr. sharing the workload.

If Head Coach Dan Quinn and new offensive coordinator David Blough adopt a similar strategy in 2026, Ford is poised to compete for significant playing time. Although he is likely to start as the third option in the backfield rotation, his experience offers reliable depth for Washington. Croskey-Merritt is anticipated to lead the rushing attacks after finishing his rookie season with 805 yards and eight touchdowns on 175 attempts. Meanwhile, White brings substantial pass-catching capabilities, averaging 51.25 receptions per season throughout his four-year career and ranking 16th in Pro Football Focus’s pass-blocking grades for running backs last season.

Ford’s well-rounded abilities ensure that he can step in effectively should injuries affect either Croskey-Merritt or White, providing a dependable veteran presence for Blough to utilize.

A Cost-Effective Addition

The decision to sign Ford seems to be a cost-effective strategy for the Commanders, securing experienced depth without committing to a long-term contract. This move reinforces the team’s flexible approach to the running back position as they prepare for the 2026 season. Ford’s experience and versatility will undoubtedly contribute to Washington’s offensive efforts as they aim to improve their performance in the upcoming season.
