The John D. Spreckels Center in Coronado is expanding its fitness offerings by introducing Zumba Gold classes on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. The new schedule, effective immediately, features low-impact dance fitness sessions designed for individuals of all ages. The classes will be held at 1019 7th Street, commencing at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, led by certified instructor Marg Stark.
Zumba Gold is tailored for those seeking a gentler approach to fitness. According to Stark, “Zumba Gold is easier on the joints than regular Zumba, with no pivots or jumps, but it features all the fun of Latin and pop rhythms and simple choreography.” This class has been described as “exercise in disguise,” allowing participants to enjoy a club-like atmosphere without the late-night outings.
The health benefits associated with group dance classes are well-documented. Stark references several research studies that highlight the positive impacts of such activities, including weight loss, reduced risk of dementia and heart disease, and enhanced mood. “It’s the combined power of cardio, the brain work following the steps, and the socialization you get dancing with a community,” she explained.
Community engagement is a core aspect of Zumba Gold. Participants often come together for special occasions and public performances. Last year, Stark and her group showcased their skills at the Coronado Film Festival during a beach screening of the musical “Mamma Mia,” as well as at Main Street’s “Small Business Saturday” events.
Those interested in attending are encouraged to wear sneakers and bring a water bottle. Walk-in rates are set at $17 per class, while registering for the monthly session reduces the cost to $12 for Coronado residents. Discounts are also available for individuals who sign up for classes on both days.

This expansion of Zumba Gold reflects the growing interest in accessible fitness options within the community, aiming to promote health and wellness through enjoyable activity.
