UPDATE: Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) has just announced the establishment of the Schiller Foundation Economics Scholarship, backed by a generous $1 million donation from esteemed economist Dr. Bradley R. Schiller. This impactful scholarship is designed to support LTCC students who wish to transfer to four-year universities and continue their studies in economics.
In a statement from LTCC Superintendent/President Jeff DeFranco, he emphasized the significance of this scholarship: “Dr. Schiller dedicated his career to helping students understand how economics shapes the world around them. This scholarship will honor his remarkable career and ensure that future students carry forward his vision of economics as a force for positive change.”
Dr. Schiller has an illustrious background, having taught at prestigious institutions including American University and the University of California, Berkeley. He has advised numerous U.S. Presidents and authored several influential textbooks, including The Economy Today. His work highlights the critical role economics plays in everyday life, making this scholarship particularly vital.
The Schiller Foundation Economics Scholarship offers up to $10,000 per year for a maximum of two years. The funds will be allocated as follows: $7,000 will go directly to the four-year institution for tuition and fees, and $3,000 will support students with costs related to books and housing.
To qualify, students must demonstrate a strong interest in economics, complete two college-level economics courses, and maintain a minimum B average in Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. Additionally, preference will be given to those who have completed at least 30 LTCC units.
Dr. Schiller expressed his commitment to education, stating, “Education opens doors to opportunity and understanding. This scholarship is meant to help LTCC students see how economics connects to everyday life and to support their continued success at a four-year university.”
The scholarship renewal for a second year requires recipients to complete the equivalent of 20 semester units with a 3.0 GPA or better at their four-year institution.
