Born Betty Charbonnet in 1921 in Detroit, she had a vivid childhood, including surviving the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 while living in New Orleans. After moving to Oakland, California, she co-founded one of the first Black-owned record stores in the Bay Area in 1945 with her first husband.
Soskin was a fierce advocate for civil rights, participating actively in discussions to shape the management plan for the Home Front park. Throughout her life, she received numerous accolades, including being named California Woman of the Year in 1995. In 2015, she was honored with a presidential coin from President Barack Obama after lighting the National Christmas tree at the White House.
Despite facing adversity, including a robbery in June 2016 where she was assaulted in her home, Soskin made a remarkable recovery, returning to her duties shortly afterward. The coin she received from Obama was later replaced.
