Advocacy Specialist Jeremy Daffern to Present ‘Listening Differently’ Tonight

URGENT UPDATE: Jeremy Daffern, an advocacy specialist representing the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, is set to present the impactful program “Listening Differently” tonight, October 28, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kanter Student Center’s Frey Conference Suite in Wayne. This event, which opens its doors at 5:30 p.m., is free and open to the public, with food provided.

Daffern, who holds a degree from Gallaudet University, aims to share his personal journey as a deaf individual navigating a world designed primarily for hearing individuals. “Being deaf or hard of hearing is an experience I can never completely understand,” Daffern states. He emphasizes the importance of learning from those who have successfully adapted, advocating for a more inclusive community where everyone can thrive.

The program will feature Daffern alongside ASL interpreter Meghann Cassidy, who will facilitate discussions about resilience and hope in the face of challenges. Attendees will also have the opportunity to engage with the Wayne State Department of Music, concluding the event with a unique “listening differently” experience that underscores the evening’s theme.

This initiative is sponsored by Wayne State’s public and global health honors students, the service-learning program, and the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Why This Matters: As social awareness surrounding accessibility grows, Daffern’s insights are crucial for fostering understanding and empathy within communities. His presentation promises to be both enlightening and transformative, offering practical resources for those looking to support their deaf and hard-of-hearing neighbors.

For those interested in attending, the event starts shortly, so make sure to arrive early to secure your spot. For further details, contact Barbara Engebretsen at Wayne State at 402-375-7044 or via email at [email protected]. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage and “listen differently”!
