Artillery Shell Strikes CHP Patrol Car on I-5 in California

BREAKING: An artillery shell fired during a Marine Corps demonstration detonated mid-air over California’s Interstate 5, striking a California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicle with debris. The incident occurred on October 18, 2025, causing significant concern but, fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Authorities confirmed that the live-fire event, part of the U.S. Marine Corps’ 250th Amphibious Capabilities Demonstration at Camp Pendleton, involved a 155mm artillery round that detonated prematurely while CHP officers were managing traffic on I-5. The highway, a major transportation route, was temporarily closed by California Governor Gavin Newsom as a precautionary measure.
CHP stated that the detonation caused damage to the patrol car but did not injure the officers. The Marine Corps has been notified, and all additional live-fire demonstrations have been canceled in light of this alarming event. CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado, an active Marine, expressed deep concern:
“This was an unusual and concerning situation. It is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway.”
The demonstration was meant to showcase the Navy-Marine Corps’ capability to project combat power globally. However, the incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols and coordination between federal, state, and local authorities during such high-stakes events. CHP has initiated an internal report and recommended an after-action review to strengthen future safety measures.
Capt. Gregory Dreibelbis, a Marine Corps spokesperson, confirmed the investigation into the detonation, stating,
“We are aware of the report of a possible airborne detonation of a 155mm artillery round outside the designated impact area. The demonstration went through a rigorous safety evaluation, and deliberate layers of redundancy were in place to ensure the safety of fellow citizens.”
In response to the incident, the Marine Corps has suspended firing.
Governor Newsom strongly criticized the decision to conduct the demonstration over a busy highway. He stated,
“This could have killed someone. Firing live rounds over a busy highway isn’t just wrong — it’s dangerous.”
Newsom’s statements reflect ongoing tensions with former President Donald Trump, who has faced backlash for military deployments in civilian areas.
As investigations continue, this incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures during military demonstrations, especially those conducted near public roadways. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the situation develops, making it critical for the public to stay informed.
Residents and commuters are urged to remain cautious as reviews of the incident unfold, focusing on how similar events can be prevented in the future.
