Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood Honored with 2025 Award

BREAKING: Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood has just been awarded the prestigious 2025 Leadership Award from the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA). The announcement was made during the MSFCA’s annual conference held in Duluth from October 15-18, 2025, recognizing Sherwood’s outstanding contributions to the fire service.

This award is presented annually to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to enhancing the fire service. According to a post from the Bemidji Fire Department, Sherwood has significantly uplifted the department’s capacity, morale, and readiness. “Chief Sherwood’s vision for accountability and continuous improvement reflects the very criteria of the award,” the post emphasized.

Since taking the helm as chief in 2021, after joining the department in 2002, Sherwood has been a driving force for innovation and community partnership. During the award presentation, MSFCA President Eric Bullen highlighted Sherwood’s dedication to advocating for fire service improvements at both state and national levels.

Earlier this year, Sherwood secured a scholarship to attend the Congressional Fire Services Institute Symposium in Washington, D.C., further showcasing his commitment to the field. Bullen noted, “Chief Sherwood fit in seamlessly with our legislative committee, advocating for greater Minnesota.”

In addition to his advocacy work, Sherwood’s leadership was crucial following the devastating storm that struck on June 21. He swiftly organized a response to an overwhelming call volume and activated the Intrastate Mutual Aid Plan, allowing resources from across the state to assist. This timely action helped his staff manage personal property losses while ensuring community safety.

The Bemidji Fire Department expressed their pride in having such an exceptional leader. “When our chief leads well, our entire community benefits,” they stated in their social media announcement.

As Sherwood continues to lead the Bemidji Fire Department with vision and compassion, this recognition serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of the community. Stay tuned for more updates on his initiatives and the continued impact on Bemidji’s fire service.
