Bismarck Volleyball Clinches Final Four Spot with Historic Win

UPDATE: Bismarck volleyball has ended a 25-year playoff drought by securing a spot in the Class 1 state semifinals after a dominant three-game sweep over Gideon on October 14, 2023. The Lady Indians showcased their strength and determination with scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-23, marking their 37th win of the season.

This victory is monumental for the Bismarck program, which has struggled in the playoffs for over two decades. Senior Halie Dickey, who has personal ties to the team’s past failures, expressed the immense pressure leading up to this match. “This was our last chance to do it,” Dickey stated. “I just want to make them proud and for our team to go far.”

Under the leadership of Coach Chelsea Hennes, Bismarck has transformed from a struggling team to a formidable contender. The Lady Indians, now boasting a record of 37-3, will face Liberal (18-8) in the semifinals at The Civic Arena in St. Joseph on October 20, 2023.

Bismarck’s victory was propelled by the impressive performance of sophomore middle hitter Loryn Pierson, who recorded 15 kills and contributed two blocks. Senior Ashley Hawkins added 13 kills and 16 digs, delivering the final blow that sealed the match.

The team fought through early setbacks, showcasing their resilience by overcoming multiple deficits in the third game. Hennes noted the significant shift in mentality after winning a tense match against Leopold just days prior. “I knew when we won that fifth set against Leopold, that feeling was kind of broken,” she said. “My girls just refused to give up. That mentality is huge heading to state.”

Gideon, with a strong season record of 32-4, was led by sophomore Layla Watkins, who delivered a match-high 20 kills. Despite their efforts, the Bulldogs could not match the power and precision of Bismarck’s attack.

The Lady Indians’ journey to the semifinals marks a significant achievement for the school and its players, who have been motivated by the legacy of past teams. “Everyone said this was the group that would make it to state. We’ve let that be our motivation ever since,” Halie Dickey reflected.

As Bismarck prepares for the semifinals, all eyes will be on this determined team that has not only broken a long-standing playoff jinx but is now poised to claim its first championship title. Volleyball fans and the community are eagerly anticipating the showdown against Liberal next Friday night.

This remarkable turnaround for Bismarck volleyball is not just about wins and losses; it signifies a collective effort and resilience that has resonated deeply within the team and their supporters. The excitement is palpable as they inch closer to their championship dreams.
