UPDATE: The body of 40-year-old Eryn VanAcker, who went missing last week, has been recovered from the North Fork of the American River in Placer County. Authorities confirmed the tragic news on Monday afternoon, marking a devastating end to the search that began on July 14, 2023.
VanAcker was last seen at approximately 2:30 PM on Friday while walking her dog on the Codfish Falls Trail near Colfax, California. Just 15 minutes later, her dog was found alone, prompting immediate concern. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office initiated a search around 6 PM that day, deploying teams to scour the area by land, air, and water.
During the initial search, authorities located VanAcker’s vehicle, her cell phone, and a dog bowl near the river. Fortunately, her dog was retrieved safely. However, the search continued throughout the weekend, as volunteers and rescue teams worked tirelessly in hopes of finding her alive.
On Monday, the sheriff’s office announced that VanAcker’s body had been recovered. In their statement, they expressed deep condolences:
“This outcome is not what anyone hoped for. Our deepest condolences are with Eryn’s family, friends, and loved ones as they navigate this unimaginable loss.”
The search and recovery efforts highlight the dangers of hiking in remote areas, especially when unexpected events occur. As the community mourns, authorities are reminding outdoor enthusiasts to prioritize safety while exploring natural spaces.
