Brunswick Hills Police Acquire Radar Unit to Enhance Traffic Safety

URGENT UPDATE: Brunswick Hills Township has just approved the purchase of a Stalker Radar data collection unit for $2,335, enhancing the capabilities of the police department to monitor traffic more effectively. This decision was made during a trustee meeting on October 14, 2023, with immediate implications for local road safety.

Police Chief Tim Sopkovich confirmed that the radar unit will be strategically placed throughout the township to gather crucial traffic data. Unlike typical speed-enforcement signs, this device operates covertly, counting vehicles in both lanes. “This will allow us to accurately record traffic volumes on our roads,” Sopkovich stated.

The data collected will be invaluable for law enforcement and the service department, aiding in targeted enforcement where necessary. Recent complaints about heavy commercial truck traffic, particularly on Sleepy Hollow and Marks roads, have underscored the urgency of this purchase. While it is legal for trucks to use these roads, the new radar device will help identify instances of speeding and traffic congestion.

In addition to the radar purchase, trustees approved a series of other significant expenditures to improve local infrastructure. A $36,750 purchase order to Karvo Companies was approved for base repairs and top coating on Sleepy Hollow Road. Moreover, a $3,200 order to Star Paving for sealing and striping the parking lot at Brunswick Hills Fire Station 2 was also confirmed.

Trustees are committed to maintaining the safety and functionality of township vehicles, approving quarterly undercoating for fire department vehicles at a cost of $1,560 and not exceeding $2,045 for service and zoning vehicles.

The Medina County Engineer’s Office Policy and Procedures for Sales and Materials was also endorsed, enabling the township to procure road salt from Medina County when necessary.

Residents should mark their calendars for upcoming meetings: the Board of Zoning Appeals on November 5, 2023, and the Zoning Commission on November 20, 2023, both at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 1918 Pearl Road.

This proactive approach by Brunswick Hills Township underscores the administration’s dedication to improving road safety and addressing community concerns. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
