UPDATE: Colorado State University has fired Head Coach Jay Norvell following an embarrassing homecoming loss to Hawaii, which ended with a score of 31-19 Saturday night. This decision, announced just hours after the game, comes as the Rams struggle with a current season record of 2-5, raising urgent questions about the future of the football program.

Defensive Coordinator Tyson Summers has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season. This shake-up signals a significant shift for CSU as it prepares to join the Pac-12 Conference next year.

Athletic Director John Weber emphasized the need for “new leadership” to elevate the team’s performance. In a heartfelt statement, Weber acknowledged Norvell’s character and commitment to developing young athletes but stressed the importance of competitiveness at the highest levels of college football.

“While we’ve seen progress, a change in leadership is necessary to achieve the sustained excellence our program requires,”

Weber stated in the press release.

Norvell was hired in August 2021 with the objective of revitalizing CSU’s football program. However, the disappointing start this season, after an 8-5 record and bowl appearance last year, prompted the administration to reassess the direction of the team.

As the university embarks on a nationwide search for Norvell’s permanent successor, fans and stakeholders are left to wonder who will lead the Rams into their new era. The urgency of this transition is palpable as CSU aims to establish a winning program capable of competing at the highest levels.

For now, all eyes will be on Summers as he takes the reins, with the next game scheduled for next Saturday. The question remains: can he turn the season around and set a positive tone for the future of CSU football?

Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
