UPDATE: The CSU Rams faced their first defeat of the season in a nail-biting finish against the Denver Pioneers, falling 83-81 at Moby Arena on November 10, 2023. Despite a valiant effort, including a last-second shot opportunity, the Rams were unable to clinch victory, dropping to a record of 4-1.
The Rams struggled with their shooting performance, hitting only 79.5% from the free-throw line and 44.4% from three-point range. In a dramatic finale, Josh Pascarelli’s buzzer-beater attempt missed the mark, sealing the Rams’ fate.
After trailing 41-33 at halftime, the Rams surged back with a 12-2 run early in the second half, tying the game at 45. Kyle Jorgensen, who led the Rams with 29 points, played a pivotal role in this comeback, marking his third career high in scoring this season.
The Pioneers responded effectively, regaining control with a 61-56 lead after making six consecutive field goals. The Rams struggled offensively during this stretch, failing to score for over five minutes. Despite multiple attempts to close the gap, the Pioneers consistently answered back, maintaining their lead.
With just 43 seconds left in the game, the Rams narrowed the deficit to one point at 80-79 thanks to free throws by Carey Booth. However, following a missed layup by Jevin Muniz, the teams exchanged free throws, leaving the Rams trailing 83-81 as they called a timeout with just 2.3 seconds on the clock.
“Every possession mattered, and we fought hard until the end,” said Jorgensen in a post-game interview, emphasizing the team’s determination despite the loss.
The Rams had an impressive start, taking an early lead at 19-11 before the Pioneers rallied to take control. DU’s Carson Johnson made a crucial three-pointer at the halftime buzzer, extending the Pioneers’ lead to 41-33.
Booth contributed significantly with 18 points and five rebounds, while Brandon Rechsteiner added 11 points. The Rams will look to bounce back as they prepare for their next challenge against Virginia Tech on Wednesday at the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas.
