Delbarton Defeats Bergen Catholic 2-1 in NJNPA Semifinals

UPDATE: In a thrilling semifinal match, No. 9 Delbarton clinched a 2-1 victory over Bergen Catholic in the North Jersey, Non-Public A Tournament, held earlier today in Oradell. This decisive win propels Delbarton into the finals against top-seeded St. Benedict’s on Thursday.

Delbarton, the third seed in the tournament, struck first when Liam Murphy scored just six minutes into the game, aided by a precise pass from Owen Miller. The early goal set the tone, giving Delbarton a crucial 1-0 lead.

However, the match intensified as it progressed. In the 74th minute, Peter Wynne scored the go-ahead goal, securing Delbarton’s lead off a well-placed assist from Dylan Mazzarella. Delbarton’s goalkeeper, Vain Swamy, showcased his skills with two key saves, while Bergen Catholic’s John Coleman recorded three saves in an effort to keep his team in the game.

This victory is significant for Delbarton, as they aim to reclaim the Non-Public A section title for the first time since 2018, when they triumphed in a nail-biting shootout against Seton Hall Prep. Delbarton has reached the finals three times since then, but they were defeated by St. Benedict’s last season, 4-0.

As Delbarton prepares for the championship showdown, fans eagerly anticipate a rematch against St. Benedict’s, who dominated Seton Hall Prep with a resounding 5-1 win in the other semifinal. The upcoming final promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams bringing their A-game.

Stay tuned for updates as Delbarton seeks redemption and aims for glory in the finals.
