UPDATE: A delivery truck struck the overpass at Robinson Middle School this afternoon, causing cosmetic damage to the building but thankfully no injuries. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. as classes continued without interruption.
The collision involved a truck from McAuliffe Elementary School, located nearby at 570 Beacon St., which accidentally hit the overpass connecting the school’s main campus to its gymnasium. Principal Bridget Dowling immediately reassured families in a letter, emphasizing that student safety remains the top priority. She stated, “Please know that student safety is always our top priority. We take every precaution to ensure our school remains a safe and secure environment for all.”
Emergency responders from the Lowell Police Department arrived on the scene promptly, documenting the damage and assessing the situation. No injuries were reported among students or the truck driver, and the building was deemed structurally sound following an inspection.
Deputy Superintendent Mark LeBlanc confirmed that the truck’s trailer struck the base of the overpass, which lacked sufficient clearance for large vehicles. City Manager Tom Golden noted that while this incident did not reach the notoriety of Lowell’s infamous Spaghettiville Bridge, it is not the first time this particular area has been struck. “In fact, that same spot has been hit previously,” he mentioned, adding that the damage was comparable to the siding of a house.
With the damage assessed and no safety concerns, classes at Robinson Middle School will proceed as scheduled. This incident highlights the ongoing issues with vehicle clearance in the area, prompting further discussions on safety measures for local schools.
