Johnson died peacefully overlooking the Swinomish boat channel, surrounded by memories of his rich adventures. Born in 1925 on a dairy farm in Cloverdale, Oregon, he enlisted in the Navy at just 17 and served valiantly during World War II, ultimately becoming a Chief Gunner’s Mate on a sub-chaser in the North Pacific theater.
After the war, Johnson moved to Santa Cruz, where he made significant contributions to the community. Notably, he became the first person to water ski across the Monterey Bay, showcasing his adventurous spirit.
Transitioning into construction, Johnson built hundreds of homes, condos, and apartments in Santa Cruz and Berkeley, impacting countless lives. His greatest passion, however, remained the sea. In the 1960s, he and his wife, Madeline Faller, embarked on transformative sailing journeys, taking their young children through the Panama Canal and across the seas to far-off destinations in Asia, the South Pacific, and Europe.
Johnson’s zest for life inspired many in Santa Cruz. He famously encouraged others to “Follow your dreams, my friends,” embodying a philosophy that resonated deeply within the community.
