El Tour de Tucson Celebrates Cycling Legend Ralph Phillips Today

UPDATE: El Tour de Tucson is set to honor cycling legend Ralph Phillips today as the event kicks off for its 42nd year. Expected to attract nearly 11,000 riders, this year’s event shows remarkable growth from last November when a record 10,000 participants took to the streets.

The festivities begin at 7:00 AM at the Tucson Convention Center, where Phillips will be recognized for his decades of dedication to the cycling community. Known for mapping the event’s challenging 102-mile route, Phillips has significantly shaped El Tour de Tucson into one of the nation’s premier cycling events.

Reflecting on his early experiences, Phillips recalled, “I got third place in my first El Tour in 1985,” highlighting the challenges riders faced, including wading through flooded areas. His contributions have helped attract international riders who come to Tucson each winter to train, a testament to the event’s growing prestige.

For nearly 20 years, Phillips has partnered with Tucson broadcaster Allen ‘Big Al’ Kath to bring the excitement of El Tour to listeners. Kath describes Phillips as “my John Madden,” emphasizing his extensive knowledge and influence in Tucson’s cycling scene.

As the designated honoree this year, Phillips expressed his gratitude, saying, “I’m very humbled… I really appreciate it.” His passion for cycling remains unwavering, as he looks forward to the future of the sport in Tucson, especially with the recent opening of the new Tucson Velodrome. “We’ve been trying to get one in for 50 years,” Phillips stated, expressing relief that it has finally come to fruition in his lifetime.

Since its inception in 1983, El Tour de Tucson has raised nearly $130 million for local charities, making a significant impact on the community. This year’s ride promises to honor Phillips not only for his contributions but also for his enduring love of cycling.

As cyclists prepare to hit the road, the excitement builds, and the community comes together to celebrate a shared passion for cycling. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this historic event—join the ride and witness the legacy of Ralph Phillips firsthand!
