BREAKING: The Fitchburg Art Museum (FAM) has officially reopened its doors today, December 5, 2023, after a brief closure, and it’s ready to celebrate its centennial with exciting new exhibits. Starting now and running through May 24, 2024, art lovers can immerse themselves in the captivating world of Boston-based artist Tara Sellios with her groundbreaking exhibition, “Ask Now the Beasts.”
This exhibit showcases Sellios’s monumental photographs that explore the beauty of the grotesque. Using a large format 8 X 10 camera, she creates stunning still life compositions from organic materials such as animal bones, insect specimens, and dried flowers. Each large-scale print captures intricate details, inviting viewers to reflect on themes of life, death, and decay. The title of the series draws inspiration from the Book of Job, delving into the cyclical nature of Earth and intertwining symbols of death with the beauty found in decay.
In addition to Sellios’s work, FAM is unveiling “FESTIVAL: A Celebration of African Art,” an exhibition that will be on display for the next year. This exhibition marks the first in a series dedicated to FAM’s centennial, highlighting the museum’s extensive African Art collection. The display illustrates universal themes of life, power, and celebration, featuring artifacts from the first millennium CE to contemporary sculptures.
Join the festivities tonight from 5:30 PM to 8 PM as FAM kicks off its centennial celebrations. The evening will include a 100th Anniversary Toast, a special appearance by FAM founder Eleanor Norcross, portrayed by Sally Cragin from Stratton Players, and an exclusive preview of the Centennial Exhibition. Guests can enjoy drinks and appetizers provided by Finicky Fork throughout the evening.
Attendance is free and open to the public, although sign-up is encouraged to help with planning. Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate a century of art in Fitchburg!
