Garland Mourns Loss of Longtime Commissioner S.J. Smith at 81

URGENT UPDATE: The town of Garland is in mourning following the passing of longtime Commissioner Sanford Walter “S.J.” Smith Jr., who died on October 27, 2025, at the age of 81. Smith dedicated over 40 years of his life to public service, profoundly impacting his community.

Born on August 4, 1944, Smith was a lifelong resident of Garland, where he served as commissioner from the early 1980s until his retirement in 2020. His commitment to improving local infrastructure — including roads, public works, buildings, and cemeteries — has left a lasting legacy for generations of residents.

In his final town meeting, Smith reflected on his journey, stating, “I appreciate being part of this town where I was born and raised.” His niece, Mary Smith, remembered him as a man with an “unrelenting work ethic” and a “heart of gold.” She emphasized, “If everyone had a heart like his, we wouldn’t have so many problems in the world.”

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Commissioner S.J. Smith. His 40 years of dedicated service to the town of Garland leave a lasting legacy of leadership, integrity, and compassion,” said Mayor Austin Brown.
