Hartselle’s Lt. Gen. Robert York Inducted into Hall of Fame

UPDATE: Lt. Gen. Robert York, a revered military leader from Hartselle, has been posthumously inducted into the Morgan County Leadership Hall of Fame during a ceremony on March 5. This significant honor was presented by Hartselle Councilwoman Sherry Yeager on behalf of York, as no family members were available to accept the award in person.

The induction took place at the annual scholarship ceremony hosted by the Morgan County Schools Foundation. Mayor Missy Evans announced that the award will be showcased in the new library once completed, ensuring York’s legacy remains a part of the community’s fabric.

Born on April 23, 1913, York’s remarkable journey began when he moved to Hartselle at age five to live with his aunt and uncle. He enlisted in the Alabama National Guard and later the United States Army, rising to the rank of colonel by age thirty-two, making him one of the youngest to achieve this rank.

York served valiantly during World War II as a battalion commander with the 1st Battalion, leading campaigns in Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. His military career included teaching tactics at the United States Military Academy at West Point, serving as deputy chief of staff of the United Nations Command in Korea, and acting as the Army liaison officer in Singapore. He retired in 1968, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and valor.

During the ceremony, Carson Clark of the Hall of Fame Committee emphasized York’s dedication, stating,

“He never asked his soldiers to do anything he would not do himself.”

This sentiment was echoed in the biography written by Colonel Herbert J. Lloyd, which highlights York’s exceptional character and contributions to military history.

York’s accolades are numerous, including the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, two Silver Stars, a Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster, and many more. His commitment to service and excellence continues to inspire.

York married Grace Buckland and together they raised five daughters before relocating to San Diego, California, in 1983. He passed away in 1988 and is interred at West Point Cemetery.

In addition to York’s induction, the Morgan County Schools Foundation recognized scholarship recipients, including Claire Dunaway from Priceville High School and Callie Rae Childers and Blakely Kay Faulkner from A.P. Brewer High School. Each student received awards aimed at empowering local youth through education.

The Foundation’s mission is to support parents, students, and teachers, and its Leadership Hall of Fame was established in 2016 to celebrate both past and present leaders from the community. Clark stated, “We always try to pick a posthumous person because we want to show people in the past who had an impact on Morgan County.”

As the community honors Lt. Gen. Robert York, his story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of leadership and courage, inspiring future generations to strive for greatness. The ceremony not only celebrated York’s life but also reinforced the Foundation’s commitment to fostering leadership within Morgan County.
