Hilo Skatepark Project Gains Momentum with New Contracts

UPDATE: The effort to construct a much-anticipated skatepark in Hilo is accelerating as new contracts are finalized for design and permitting, marking a significant milestone for the community. Authorities confirm that these developments are paving the way for the skatepark to be located directly across from the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
As the Hilo Skateplaza Coalition gears up for fundraising, the county is diligently working to complete an environmental assessment, which is a prerequisite for the community group to begin its financial campaign. Rhonda Nichols, president of the coalition, emphasizes, “Our group will not raise funds until the EA and plans are completed.” After 16 years of effort, the coalition is determined to avoid past setbacks that resulted in lost funds due to sudden changes in the project’s direction.
In a recent statement, Nichols disclosed that the coalition aims to raise $2 million once the necessary assessments are complete. “We want to give people a reason to celebrate their contributions and see timely results from their donations,” she stated, highlighting that many donors are poised to contribute both cash and in-kind donations.
Clayton Honma, Director of Parks and Recreation, revealed that the environmental assessment is “currently underway” with hopes for completion by the end of this year. On September 20, a contract was signed with an architect to design an indoor facility that will serve as a skating derby and event space.
According to county spokesman Tom Callis, this contract is the first of three essential agreements to advance the skatepark’s development. The next two contracts will address the planning, design, and permitting of outdoor skate elements, including roadways, concession buildings, and parking facilities. The first phase of construction is set to focus on these outdoor elements, while the indoor skating facility will follow in a subsequent phase.
Honma stated that funding for “most of” the first construction phase has already been secured. He also noted that collaboration with the Skateplaza Coalition will be crucial for financing the outdoor skate elements. “We are looking forward to exploring options for the second construction phase,” he added, underscoring the importance of understanding the facility’s footprint for future planning.
Nichols expressed gratitude for the ongoing partnership with county leadership and staff, stating, “I believe, in the end, this project will have been worth the wait and process.” The community eagerly anticipates the skatepark, which promises to be a vital addition to Hilo’s recreational offerings.
As the project moves forward, the community remains hopeful that this long-awaited facility will soon become a reality, providing a space for local skaters and enthusiasts alike. Stay tuned for more updates as this developing story unfolds.
