James “Jim” Early, Beloved Educator and Community Leader, Passes at 87

BREAKING NEWS: James Donald “Jim” Early, a cherished educator and community leader, has passed away at the age of 87. He died peacefully on December 18, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to his family and community in Waterford, New York.

Born on July 3, Jim was known for celebrating his birthday with joy on Independence Day. He was the third of five children of the late Joseph A. Early, Esq. and Loretto Powers Early. Jim is survived by his loving sister, Elizabeth M. Early, along with many nieces and nephews, and his four daughters: Grace E. Boss, Jane F. Early, Margaret H. Warner, and Kathleen L. Early. He was preceded in death by his daughter Mary Ellen Early in June 2025.

Jim’s impact extended far beyond his family. An educator for over three decades, he began his career at St. Mary’s Academy before transitioning to Hudson Valley Community College in 1967, where he taught English Composition until his retirement in 1999. His commitment to education shaped the lives of countless students, earning him deep respect in the community.

Following retirement, Jim served as the Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford for a decade, demonstrating integrity and commitment to public service. He also held a position as a Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker, showcasing his versatility and dedication to helping others.

Jim was deeply involved in his community, proudly serving with the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department for over 57 years. His passion for service was matched only by his love for music; he was a talented pipe organist and served at Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy. His contributions to the Knights of Columbus and the Waterford Lions Club further underscored his dedication to service and fellowship.

In his later years, Jim faced health challenges and received compassionate care at the Eddy Heritage House Nursing Home in Troy. His passing marks a significant loss for those who knew him, as he was a beacon of kindness, friendship, and faith within his community.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home in Waterford, followed by a service at St. Mary of the Assumption Church at noon. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waterford. Friends and family are invited to visit the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.
