Jansen Couple Crafts 70 Miniature Buildings to Preserve History

UPDATE: A husband and wife duo in Jansen, Nebraska, are capturing community memories through their handcrafted miniature buildings. Rick and Peggy Rahe have now created about 70 replicas of barns, businesses, and homes, turning their passion into a small business that connects residents to their history.

The couple showcased their work at the American Legion Hall in Jansen, where community members could view their impressive collection for the first time. “When you see them all together, it’s just amazing,” said Peggy Rahe. “It’s tough, but everything is made with love—even if we swear at it a few times.”

Rick Rahe, who began this hobby seven years ago, draws inspiration from photos and postcards provided by customers. His creations not only reflect the architecture of Jansen but also the emotional ties residents have to these buildings. “When I look at them, I remember a time, a place, people—most of whom are gone,” expressed Nancy Bettin, a community member who commissioned several pieces.

Each miniature can take up to two weeks or even months to complete. Rick meticulously works in his garage, while Peggy adds the detailed painting. “I made general stores, barns, anything I could think of,” Rick stated. The emotional impact of their work is profound, with many clients expressing joy and nostalgia when receiving their miniatures. “I’ve seen people sit down and cry when they get their projects,” Rick shared.

The Rahe couple’s journey took a significant turn when Rick lost his leg due to diabetes a decade ago. During his recovery, he found solace and purpose in crafting these miniatures. “It helps relieve a lot of the stress—just as long as I can get out to my garage and do my wood cutting,” he said.

This initiative is not just about building models; it’s about preserving the rich history of Jansen. Residents have rallied around the Rahe’s work, with many expressing their gratitude for the memories these miniatures evoke. “Their faces just light up,” Rick noted, showcasing the powerful connection between the community and its history.
