Kiana Safari Dominates SCCAL Finals, Repeats as Champion

BREAKING: Aptos High sophomore Kiana Safari has just clinched the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL) singles title, defeating Aila Papadopoulos of Scotts Valley with a commanding score of 6-2, 6-0 at Imperial Courts on Thursday. This victory marks Safari’s repeat as league champion and secures her spot in the upcoming Central Coast Section (CCS) Singles Tournament set for November 17-19.

Safari’s intense training paid off. The defending champion spent 1.5 months at the No Quit Tennis Academy in Las Vegas over the summer, honing her skills and preparing for high-pressure matches. She effortlessly stormed through the tournament, including two previous victories by double bagels, showcasing her prowess on the court.

“It was pretty fun,” Safari said after the match. “We both played really well. There were a lot of really close games, 40-30 and deuce. She has improved so much.” The defending champion’s hard work and dedication were palpable as she dominated the final match, leaving little doubt about her capabilities.

In doubles action, Francesca Garces and Julia Kennedy from Santa Cruz secured a decisive win over Aptos twins Isabella and Natalia Calderon, with a score of 6-1, 6-3. This victory extends their season and highlights the competitive spirit of the SCCAL.

The Mariners, who have a stellar overall record of 10-2 and a perfect 10-0 in league play, are set to begin the CCS Team Tournament on Monday at 2 p.m. The seeding meeting on Saturday will determine their next opponent.

Safari, now boasting a 19-3 record in her two-year varsity career, is motivated for her upcoming CCS matches, especially after experiencing a challenging draw last season. “Redemption,” she stated emphatically, expressing her desire to advance further this year.

Meanwhile, Papadopoulos, who also plays for the Falcons’ volleyball team, faced a grueling schedule, participating in both tennis and volleyball competitions. “It’s been super hard,” she admitted, reflecting on her challenging journey after a recent elbow injury. Her resilience shines as she balances academics and athletics, aspiring to join a University of California school, preferably Cal.

Safari acknowledged the fierce competition from Papadopoulos, who played strategically to tire her out. “She’s such a powerful player,” Papadopoulos remarked, praising Safari’s ability to capitalize on any weak shots. Coaches and peers alike recognized Safari’s growth and skill, underscoring the evolution of her game from previous seasons.

Mariners coach Tamara Brown commended both athletes, stating, “Aila had a smart game plan today and played a great match. Kiana’s problem-solving and ability to adjust to her opponents is one of the keys to her continued success.”

As the athletes look ahead, all eyes will be on Safari and her quest for CCS glory, with hopes for a deeper run in the tournament. Her dedication to training and her recent performance have set a high bar for upcoming matches.

After the match, Safari treated herself to two crispy chicken tacos, celebrating her victory and gearing up for the challenges ahead. The excitement for the CCS tournaments is building, and fans are eager to see how these talented players will fare.
