UPDATE: King’s College in Wilkes-Barre held its thrilling annual event, “Things that Go Boom in the Night,” on October 28, 2025, captivating families and children with explosive science demonstrations. The festivities, organized by the College’s Department of Chemistry and Physics, brought excitement to the Halloween season with hands-on activities designed to inspire a love for science.
Children at the event experienced the magic of science as they created chromatography ghosts, witnessed the transformation of liquid nitrogen into gas, and participated in other mesmerizing experiments. “It’s often these kinds of moments that first sparked our love of science,” stated Dr. Julie Belanger, chair of the Chemistry and Physics Department. “Making it part of our annual Halloween tradition is as much fun for our faculty and students as it is for our guests.”
The night was filled with laughter and awe as attendees, including Zynnia Peters, 7, of Wilkes-Barre, reacted with delight to a balloon shriveling up after being dipped in liquid nitrogen. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as children and parents alike raised their hands to volunteer for various demonstrations, showcasing the engaging nature of the event.
Joseph Booth III, just 2 years old and also from Wilkes-Barre, cheered enthusiastically during the demonstrations, embodying the spirit of curiosity and joy that filled the air. The event not only entertained but also educated, making science approachable and fun for the younger audience.
As families enjoy the Halloween season, King’s College continues to foster a passion for learning through innovative and interactive experiences. With such a positive response, the College is expected to build on this success for future events.
This year’s “Things that Go Boom in the Night” serves as a reminder of the importance of engaging young minds in science, ensuring that the next generation of scientists is inspired and informed.
