Lake Charles Man Charged with Rape of Local Student

UPDATE: In an alarming case shaking the Lake Charles community, a 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the rape of an elementary school student. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office confirms that Gerson A. Espinal was taken into custody following a report from the victim at her school on Friday.

Authorities report that the victim disclosed to school staff that Espinal had touched her inappropriately on multiple occasions and ultimately raped her. The incident has raised urgent concerns about child safety in the area.

According to a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, Kayla Vincent, the victim also confided in a family member, Carla M. Artiaga, aged 32, who failed to notify law enforcement about the allegations. This failure to act has led to Artiaga’s arrest on charges of failure to report certain felonies.

Both Espinal and Artiaga have been booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center. Espinal faces serious charges, including first-degree rape and sexual battery of a victim under the age of 13, with a bond set at $500,000. Artiaga’s bond is set at $100,000. Notably, both suspects are currently being held on immigration detainers by the Department of Homeland Security.

This disturbing case underscores the critical importance of reporting suspected abuse and ensuring the safety of children within the community. As investigations continue, local officials are urging anyone with information to come forward.
