UPDATE: A heartfelt ceremony took place on October 24, 2023, at the Veterans Memorial in Lynnfield, where community members united to honor the sacrifices of local veterans. The event featured moving speeches from both military and civilian leaders, emphasizing the enduring legacy of those who serve to protect freedom.
Emceed by Veteran’s Agent Bruce Siegel, the ceremony drew a significant crowd, including Select Board Chairman Phil Crawford, who delivered a powerful address. “All American veterans share a common bond: their unwavering belief in the cause of freedom,” he stated, referencing the famous words of poet G.K. Chesterton.
Retired Army Captain and Lynnfield native David Gallo served as the event’s guest of honor, sharing his impactful experiences from Desert Storm. Gallo spoke passionately about the veterans whose names adorn the memorial, including his childhood inspiration, Lauren Lengyel, a U.S. Air Force captain and former POW in Vietnam.
Gallo recounted how Lengyel’s bravery helped him find courage during his own challenging moments in combat. “I reached out to him before my retirement to express my gratitude for his inspiration,” Gallo shared, reflecting on the importance of mentorship and heroism among veterans.
The emotional tribute highlighted not only the valor of servicemen and women but also the significant sacrifices their families make. Gallo poignantly remarked, “My wife was often more nervous about my deployment than I was. Families endure hardships that are often unseen.”
As the ceremony concluded, Gallo emphasized the critical role communities play in supporting veterans. “How we treat our veterans shapes future generations’ willingness to serve, impacting our nation’s security daily. The wonderful town of Lynnfield embodies this commitment,” he asserted.
This event serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and their families and the ongoing need for community support. As discussions continue about military service and its implications, Lynnfield stands as a model of respect and honor for those who have served.
