Man Fires Gun After Demanding Cash, Charged with Felony

UPDATE: A man has been charged with a felony after allegedly firing a gun during a confrontation over money early Monday morning. Jordan Michael Babauta, 34, faces serious charges of terrorizing with a deadly weapon following an incident that unfolded at a residence on Inalahan Highway at 2:15 a.m.

According to a magistrate’s complaint filed in Superior Court, Babauta approached another man asking for cash. The victim, who had previously assisted Babauta about three years prior, reported that he was eating breakfast outside when Babauta arrived. After being denied money, Babauta became aggressive when a woman, who was cooking nearby, insisted he leave the property.

Witnesses stated that when she told Babauta he was not welcome, he assumed a fighting stance. The situation escalated rapidly: the victim punched Babauta in defense, prompting him to draw a firearm. Babauta pointed the gun at the man and threatened to kill him, then fired a shot just inches from the couple’s feet before fleeing the scene.

Police arrested Babauta on Wednesday, where he denied making any threats. If convicted, he faces up to 28 years in prison. He has been ordered to remain in custody with a bail set at $5,000.

This alarming incident underscores the rising concerns over personal safety and gun violence in the community. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward as they continue their investigation into Babauta’s actions.
