UPDATE: A 39-year-old Memphis woman has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after allegedly running over her ex-boyfriend multiple times with her SUV. This shocking incident unfolded around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday in the 500 block of Gilleas Rd., leaving the victim severely injured.
Witnesses reported that Tanieka Ray went into a violent rage, driving her black SUV over the victim, identified as Arthur, multiple times. “She almost killed him, man, broke both his hips, broke one of his legs,” recounted nearby resident Carlos Brantley to WREG. “You know he’s in bad shape, but he’s going to be alright.”
Police arrived on the scene shortly after the incident to find Arthur suffering from critical injuries, including multiple broken bones and dislocated body parts. He was taken to the hospital by the Memphis Fire Department. Initially assessed as non-critical, his condition was later upgraded to critical as doctors prepared for surgery.
According to Brantley, who witnessed the attack, Ray was seen making multiple U-turns while yelling threats at Arthur, who lay helpless on the ground. “I heard some kind of ruckus and rushed outside,” he explained. “By the time I got there, he was laying in my driveway like he couldn’t get up.” Brantley acted quickly, providing aid and moving Arthur to safety while Ray continued her reckless behavior.
During the confrontation, Brantley claimed he heard Ray threaten to kill Arthur. “She said she would run over him again,” he recalled. “At one point, she crashed into a light pole, almost blowing up the whole block.”
Witness accounts indicate that Ray fled the scene after the attack but was later apprehended at a nearby location. Upon being taken to the police station, she invoked her right to remain silent after being read her rights.
This is not Ray’s first brush with the law; she was previously arrested in September 2020 on five counts of aggravated assault for firing a gun at a group of people in South Memphis. She is currently being held on a $250,000 bond following her arrest.
Residents are left shaken by the violence. Brantley speculated that Ray’s emotional turmoil over the breakup may have driven her to this extreme act. “I guess she was trying to get back with him, and he just didn’t want to have anything to do with her anymore,” he said.
As this story develops, the community is left to grapple with the implications of such a violent act. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, and the victim’s family is seeking justice for the traumatic event.
