URGENT UPDATE: Metropolitan Ministries is set to open its annual holiday tents on Monday, providing crucial support for families in need across the Tampa Bay region. With the number of families seeking food assistance having doubled, the organization is urgently calling for more volunteers to help meet this unprecedented demand.
Officials at Metropolitan Ministries report that rising housing costs, ongoing financial struggles from the pandemic, recent hurricanes, and the current government shutdown are driving families to seek help. “They receive the whole turkey and supplies for their family, and then when Christmas rolls around, they get toys for their kids as well,” stated Christine Long, Executive Vice President and Chief Programs Officer.
This holiday tent season is an opportunity for struggling families to receive essential items and create a festive atmosphere during the holidays. “It’s a chance for families who may be struggling to really get some of those basic needs met and make their holiday full of hope and love,” Long emphasized.
The holiday tents will be open for donations and assistance across Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties starting Monday. Metropolitan Ministries is mobilizing a massive effort, relying on 15,000 volunteers, one million pounds of food, and 60,000 toys and gift cards to support families in need.
Registration for assistance is filling up rapidly. “Registering ahead of time is critical. Our registration is filling up extremely fast, and I heard that we only have a couple more days left of slots for Thanksgiving,” Long warned. Families can register both in person or through the organization’s website.
As the holiday season approaches, the community’s response will be vital in ensuring that families have the support they need. With the challenges facing many this year, Metropolitan Ministries aims to spread hope and joy to those struggling in the Tampa Bay area.
