Nine Arrested After Fatal Beating of Student in Lyon

French authorities have arrested nine individuals connected to the fatal beating of 23-year-old mathematics student and right-wing activist Quentin Deranque in Lyon. This incident has sparked significant political tensions in France, particularly scrutinizing the far-left party France Unbowed (LFI). Deranque succumbed to his injuries on February 14, 2026, two days after he was reportedly attacked during a protest near Lyon’s Institute of Political Studies.

According to Lyon prosecutor Thierry Dran, Deranque was assaulted by “at least six” attackers who “kicked and punched” him. An autopsy revealed severe injuries to his skull and brain, underscoring the violence of the incident. The confrontation took place amidst a demonstration organized by the anti-immigration feminist collective Némésis, which was protesting a university conference led by far-left European Parliament member Rima Hassan.

One of the arrested suspects, Jacques-Elie Favrot, has been identified as a parliamentary assistant linked to LFI lawmaker Raphaël Arnault. Favrot, through his lawyer, announced that he is stepping back from his professional duties during the investigation and has denied any involvement in Deranque’s death. The arrests have reignited discussions surrounding La Jeune Garde, a now-dissolved far-left “antifascist” group that has been associated with the case in media and political commentary.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violent act and called for calm, labeling the assault an “unprecedented outburst of violence.” He expressed his condolences on social media, stating: “Hatred that kills has no place in our country.” Macron emphasized the need for unity, stating, “In the Republic, no cause, no ideology ever justifies murder.”

LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon publicly denied any party affiliation with the violence and extended his sympathies to Deranque’s family and friends. He stated, “We express our consternation, but also our empathy and compassion for [Deranque’s] family and friends. We have said dozens of times that we oppose all forms of violence.”

The tragic event has ignited a renewed debate about political violence in France, with many calling for a reassessment of the political climate and the responsibility of political organizations. As investigations continue, the implications of this incident may resonate throughout the French political landscape for some time.
