NYC Councilman Predicts Zohran Mamdani Will Surpass Adams

UPDATE: As the New York City Council prepares for a monumental shift in leadership, Councilmember Lincoln Restler predicts that newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani will foster a more effective and collaborative government than his predecessor, Eric Adams. This urgent prediction comes just days after Mamdani’s election victory and ahead of his anticipated inauguration in January 2026.

Speaking on CBS News New York’s “The Point with Marcia Kramer,” Restler expressed optimism about the future dynamics between Mamdani and the City Council. “I’m very excited to work with this mayor to help deliver on his affordability agenda,” Restler stated, emphasizing that the Council aims to tackle pressing issues such as housing, transportation, and public safety.

The Councilmember, representing Brooklyn’s 33rd District, voiced relief over what he sees as a departure from the challenges faced under the Adams administration. “It’s been a challenge working with [Mayor] Eric Adams and his team,” Restler noted, highlighting his belief that Mamdani will bring a higher caliber of governance.

In a clear sign of change, Mamdani has already requested the resignations of 179 staffers from the Adams administration and announced a transition team of over 400 advisors. Notably, he has retained NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and appointed Dean Fuleihan, budget director for former Mayor Bill de Blasio, as his first deputy mayor.

Restler stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between collaboration and accountability. “I hope that there’s a balance between partnering with him to deliver on his affordability agenda and also, when we disagree, we’ll hold tough hearings and encourage them to do the right thing,” he said, indicating a commitment to fair oversight.

With the upcoming changes, the City Council is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future governance of New York City. As Mamdani prepares to take office, all eyes will be on how this new leadership will impact residents struggling with affordability and quality of life.
