Potosi Boys Win Central Invitational; Ste. Genevieve Girls Dominate

UPDATE: In a thrilling display of athleticism, the Potosi boys wrestling team secured victory at the Central Invitational on November 4, 2023, dominating a field of 17 teams with a total of 201 points. Meanwhile, the Ste. Genevieve girls team showcased their prowess, amassing an impressive 270.5 points to clinch the championship title.

The Potosi Trojans were led by standout performances from junior wrestlers Carter Pyatt, Gavin Stone, and Karsen Boyer. Pyatt solidified his third consecutive title at the event with an emphatic 18-0 technical fall in the 165-pound championship match against St. Francis Borgia’s Lincoln Schaefer, finishing at the 2:42 mark. Stone also made headlines with his series of victories, securing a spot in the finals alongside Boyer, who battled through a near-fall to capture his weight class at 175 pounds.

Potosi’s performance not only highlighted individual talents but also showcased their teamwork, as they held off strong challengers such as Affton and Gateway Science. North County and Central rounded out the top five teams, each securing two bracket champions.

In the girls’ division, the Ste. Genevieve Dragons were on fire, with seven of their wrestlers claiming individual championships. Aila Wolk (115), Ragan Picou (135), and Anna Fischer (170) each finished with stellar 4-0 records, all achieving maximum points with four falls. This remarkable achievement highlights the growing impact of girls’ wrestling in the region.

The tournament saw fierce competition, with noteworthy performances from Potosi’s Launa Cantrell, Kammara Tedder, and Zowee Gamble, who all reached the finals but fell short of securing titles. Cantrell showcased her skills with three pins but ultimately placed second in her weight class.

Meanwhile, North County’s senior wrestlers Aiden Nash and Jamal Robinson dominated their respective divisions, pinning all their opponents and showcasing their strength throughout the tournament. Nash, competing at 138 pounds, allowed only three points against him in the entire event.

As for the Central Invitational, the girls’ competition further emphasized the growth of the sport, with Ste. Genevieve setting a high standard. The Dragons’ performance, particularly by Keely Fallert and Maggie Price, who both pinned their opponents decisively, underscores the talent blooming in women’s wrestling.

Looking ahead, all eyes will be on these teams as they continue to build momentum in their respective wrestling seasons. The next competitions promise to be just as exciting, with athletes aiming to improve their standings and showcase their skills on larger stages.
