UPDATE: Robert Irwin, crowned champion of Dancing With the Stars season 34, is set to jet off to South Africa immediately following the finale on November 25, 2023. In an exclusive interview, Irwin revealed he won’t have time to relax as he transitions directly from the dance floor to filming a new television show abroad.
“I actually go to New York and then straight to South Africa to film another show over there,” Irwin shared with E! News shortly after the finale aired. His busy schedule comes on the heels of a demanding 11-week competition, which saw him battling through injuries, including significant rib pain.
Irwin, just 21, expressed concerns during the finale about the toll the competition had taken on his body. “I’ve been dealing with rib pain because the intercostal muscles of the ribs are under a lot of tension,” he stated in a video package aired during the show. His partner, Witney Carson, 32, voiced her worries for his health, emphasizing, “At the end of the day, his health is my priority.”
Carson herself shared the stress of preparing for the finale, noting in a TikTok video that Irwin’s rib injury had become a source of anxiety. “Today at blocking is a little stressful … Robert’s ribs have been killing him,” she said. The duo had to modify their dance routine due to his injury, adding to the pressure as they prepared for their final performance.
Despite these challenges, Irwin and Carson delivered a stunning performance, scoring a perfect 30 for both their freestyle and cha-cha-cha routines, ultimately securing their victory. This win marks a significant achievement for Irwin, coming a decade after his sister, Bindi Irwin, won the competition with judge Derek Hough.
In a remarkable display of teamwork and resilience, the pair triumphed over competitors, including influencer Alix Earle and Val Chmerkovskiy, who placed second, and Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles with Ezra Sosa, who finished third.
Looking ahead, Carson confirmed her plans to reunite with Irwin in the spring, stating, “I am, next spring, I’m there. You’re not getting rid of me that easy!” This statement hints at future collaborations that fans are eager to see.
As Irwin embarks on his new venture in South Africa, fans and followers are left buzzing with excitement over his next steps, alongside admiration for the hard work displayed throughout the season. Keep an eye on this emerging talent as he navigates his post-DWTS journey.
