Rocky Mount Man Charged After Girlfriend Shot Twice, Urgent Update

UPDATE: A Rocky Mount man has been charged with attempted murder after his girlfriend was shot at least twice during a domestic dispute at their home on October 7, 2023. The incident occurred in the 10000 block of Speights Chapel Road, just northeast of Whitakers, North Carolina.

According to the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched following a report of a gunman involved in a heated argument at the residence. Just moments later, a second call indicated that a woman had been shot at the same location. When authorities arrived, they found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Emergency medical services quickly transported her to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for treatment. The victim’s condition remains undisclosed as of now.

Investigating deputies learned that the suspect, identified as Hayward Mann, age 49, had fled the scene. Law enforcement swiftly tracked him down, taking him into custody without further incident. Mann was found in possession of a firearm, which was subsequently confiscated by deputies.

Mann now faces charges of felony attempted first-degree murder and is currently being held without bond at the Edgecombe County Detention Center. He is scheduled for a court appearance on Wednesday morning at the Edgecombe County Courthouse in Tarboro.
