UPDATE: A Sacramento jury has just found Hamdi Bazyan guilty of attempted murder and animal cruelty following a horrific attack on his parents and their family cat in December 2021. The verdict was delivered on Thursday, signaling a significant legal victory for the victims and highlighting the severity of the domestic violence incident.
The conviction stems from a violent outburst on December 26, 2021, when Bazyan’s erratic behavior prompted his parents to call the police. After officers left, Bazyan armed himself with three large knives and subjected his parents to a brutal assault, imprisoning them in their bedroom. His rampage included punching them, wielding a cane, and ultimately stabbing his mother in the torso.
In a shocking escalation of violence, Bazyan also attacked the family cat, stabbing her nine times and attempting to asphyxiate her. His father suffered multiple stab wounds while trying to shield his wife from the onslaught.
According to Deputy District Attorney Alexandra James of the Elder Abuse Unit, the jury convicted Bazyan of two counts of attempted murder, one count of animal cruelty, two counts of false imprisonment, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The jury also confirmed allegations of causing great bodily injury and personal use of a knife.
The attack ended when Bazyan’s mother managed to escape to a neighbor’s home to call for help. Bazyan fled the scene but was apprehended later near the American River bridge as police responded to the emergency call.
Both of Bazyan’s parents survived the ordeal thanks to life-saving aid after his mother’s courageous escape, and remarkably, the family cat also survived the horrific attack.
Bazyan now faces a lengthy prison sentence, with sentencing set for a later date, according to the District Attorney’s Office. This case underscores the urgent need to address domestic violence and protect vulnerable individuals within families.
