San Diego Colleges Surge in Women’s Hoops: Key Wins This Weekend

UPDATE: San Diego’s college basketball teams delivered a powerful performance this weekend, with significant victories in women’s hoops that promise to bolster their standings as conference play unfolds.

The San Diego State University (SDSU) women’s basketball team remains undefeated in the Mountain West Conference after dominant wins against Fresno State and Boise State. On December 2, 2025, the Aztecs overcame the Bulldogs with a score of 63-53 and followed up with an impressive 83-54 victory at home on Saturday, marking their seventh consecutive win. Star guard Naomi Panganiban has been pivotal, averaging 17.0 points over the past four games, leading her team to a 2-0 start alongside rivals UNLV and Colorado State.

Meanwhile, the University of San Diego (USD) also demonstrated resilience, winning back-to-back games as they prepare to dive into West Coast Conference play. With momentum building, the USD women are set to hit the road, eager to extend their winning streak.

Over at Cal State San Marcos (CSUSM), the men’s basketball team showcased remarkable grit by sweeping their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matches. After rallying from a 13-point deficit to triumph over Chico State with a final score of 83-76 on Sunday, they also defeated Cal Poly Humboldt 64-56 on Friday. Senior players Keavie Love and Dexter Stratton were instrumental, with Love scoring 33 points across both games.

In contrasting fortunes, Point Loma Nazarene (PLNU) faced setbacks with both their men’s and women’s teams losing to Azusa Pacific. The PLNU men, ranked 22nd, suffered a heartbreaking 75-73 loss after leading by 19 points, while the women fell 72-65 despite Ruby Vlahov‘s strong performance of 20 points and 9 rebounds.

The CSUSM women’s team faced challenges as well, losing three games, including to 20th-ranked Central Washington. However, Kaity Haan emerged as a standout, scoring a total of 58 points over the three games.

In community college action, San Diego City College and Cuyamaca College kicked off their conference seasons with back-to-back victories. The Knights defeated both Grossmont and San Diego Mesa, while Cuyamaca edged out Miramar and Mira Costa. MiraCosta College also claimed victory in their tournament, finishing pre-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play with an unblemished 16-0 record.

Amid these exciting developments, San Diego State divers Isabella Gomez and Alina Skrocki achieved NCAA zone qualifying marks at the Riverside Collegiate Invitational, further driving the competitive spirit in San Diego sports.
