UPDATE: San Jose State endured another devastating loss on Friday night, falling 30-25 to Utah State. The Spartans, now 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain West, have suffered four heart-wrenching defeats by a single score this season.

This latest setback marks the third time in four games that San Jose State led in the fourth quarter but could not secure a victory. Head coach Ken Niumatalolo described the losses as “gut-wrenching” and “heart ripping,” emphasizing the emotional toll on his players.

After rallying from an eight-point deficit to take a 25-24 lead early in the fourth quarter, the Spartans had multiple chances to seal the game. However, they faltered, unable to capitalize on critical drives in the final minutes.

Despite arriving in Logan, Utah, with key players injured, including NCAA-leading receiver Danny Scudero, quarterback Walker Eget delivered a commendable performance, completing 27 of 49 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns. Scudero, however, was limited to just six catches for 25 yards due to his injuries and required medical attention multiple times during the game.

San Jose State’s remaining schedule features formidable opponents, including Hawaii (5-2) and Fresno State (5-2), both currently ranked in the top five of the Mountain West. With only five games left, the Spartans must secure at least four victories to maintain their hopes for a bowl eligibility.

The team will take a much-needed bye week before facing Hawaii at CEFCU Stadium on November 1, 2023. Niumatalolo pointed out, “We need to get healthy physically and prepare for a strong Hawaii team.”

Friday’s loss showcased key moments that defined San Jose State’s struggles. After leading 25-24, they surrendered a late field goal to Utah State and failed to convert on a critical fourth-and-1 play, ultimately losing momentum. The game ended with Eget’s desperation throw being batted down as time expired.

“Our guys are hurting; you can’t not hurt after a loss like this,” Niumatalolo said.

Despite the setbacks, there were standout performances. Running back Steve Chavez-Soto rushed for a career-high 102 yards with a spectacular 66-yard touchdown run, while teammate Lamar Radcliffe added 74 yards on the ground. Receiver Leland Smith also shone with 116 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Spartans struggled to close out the game, allowing a season-high 534 yards of total offense. Niumatalolo acknowledged the team’s defensive breakdowns, stating, “We can’t give up those explosive plays.”

As the Spartans regroup during their bye week, fans are left wondering if this season will take a turn for the better. The upcoming matchup against Hawaii is crucial for San Jose State, which has shown resilience in the past. In 2023, they started 1-5 but rallied to win six straight games, earning a spot in the Hawaii Bowl.

The Spartans’ determination will be tested as they prepare to face one of their toughest challenges yet. Stay tuned for updates on their journey and efforts to reclaim their season.
