Sandy Creek Family Receives Rebuild Funding After July Floods

UPDATE: A Sandy Creek family has received a major boost as they begin to rebuild their lives after devastating floods hit Travis County, Texas, in July. The nonprofit Rebuild Sandy Creek has announced that they will fully fund the reconstruction of the Willis family’s home, a crucial step for recovery following the catastrophic flooding that claimed at least 135 lives across Central Texas.

The floods struck during the July 4 weekend, with the worst impact felt on July 5, when homes and lives were tragically swept away. “That used to be my house. It floated 10 feet in the air, well, in the water,” said resident Ashlee Willis, describing the harrowing experience. The Willis family, left with only a camp on their property, faced an uphill battle in the aftermath of the disaster.

Jenee Lamberton, co-director of Rebuild Sandy Creek, explained how the nonprofit was formed to help families like the Willises who lacked flood insurance. “It was unbelievable. It looked like an F5 tornado blew through here,” Lamberton stated, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the flooding.

As of now, approximately 70 families are still seeking assistance to rebuild their homes. The Willis family’s selection for the first funding was unanimous, highlighting their urgent need for support.

In a heartwarming moment, Lamberton delivered the news to the Willis family while they were enjoying a Taylor Swift film at their campsite. “It took us 7 weeks to get back here…and then things just got stagnant,” Willis shared, reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster since the floods. The moment was filled with tears of joy as Lamberton confirmed that the house rebuild would commence in the new year.

This announcement serves as a much-needed Christmas gift for the family after months of grief and uncertainty. “My faith in humanity had been previously restored through all of this, but now I may believe in miracles again,” Willis expressed, showcasing the profound impact of this support.

Plans for the new home are already underway, with several Lowe’s pink flags marking the site. The community’s effort to rebuild is ongoing, and Rebuild Sandy Creek is actively seeking additional funds to assist more families facing similar challenges.

For those looking to contribute to this important cause, donations can be made to Rebuild Sandy Creek, ensuring that more families receive the help they need to recover from this devastating event.

As the Willis family prepares for a new beginning, their story serves as a powerful reminder of resilience and the strength of community in the face of disaster.
