UPDATE: The SMU Mustangs’ defense has surged back into form, delivering an impressive 45-13 victory over the Boston College Eagles on October 4, 2025. This commanding performance marks a pivotal turnaround after a shaky 2-2 start to the season, showcasing the Mustangs’ potential as they navigate through conference play.
After a challenging nonconference schedule, the Mustangs were under pressure to perform. Defensive coordinator Scott Symons expressed concern earlier in the season, but something has clicked since entering ACC matchups. The defense, once the best in the conference, is now back to its dominant ways.
“We play good defense. It’s an expectation now,” said Symons, highlighting the renewed culture within the team. The standout players included safety Ahmaad Moses, who recovered two fumbles in the first quarter, and defensive end Isaiah Smith, who recorded an astounding four sacks and nine tackles, tying a program record for single-game sacks.
In a game where they held Boston College to a mere 2 of 15 on third downs, SMU’s defense demonstrated its strength by shutting out the Eagles during significant stretches. The Mustangs’ performance was a collective effort, with younger players stepping up in the absence of key defensive linemen, including Cam Robertson and Marcellus Barnes Jr.
True freshman Tyren Polley Jr., who returned from injury, contributed significantly with eight tackles and an interception that set up a touchdown. Another freshman, Sael Reyes, also made his mark with his first career interception late in the game.
The Mustangs’ defense allowed only 98 rushing yards on 40 attempts, forcing Boston College into multiple turnovers on downs. With the Eagles managing 382 yards overall, SMU’s ability to limit scoring opportunities was critical. Boston College’s only first-half score came off a deflected pass, and they didn’t find the end zone until late in the game.
As the Mustangs look to build on this momentum, they are focused on their season goals. “We’ve got the same goals as last year,” said Smith, emphasizing the team’s commitment to reaching the ACC Championship.
Fans are buzzing about the Mustangs’ resurgence, and this performance signals their determination to reclaim their status as a top contender in college football. With their sights set on Charlotte, the Mustangs are ready to continue their winning streak and resolve unfinished business from last season.
Stay tuned for more updates as SMU aims to maintain this momentum in their upcoming games.
