URGENT UPDATE: The Surrey Police Service (SPS) has just launched a critical video campaign aimed at deterring individuals from engaging in extortion-related crimes. This initiative comes in light of a surge in extortion attempts, including a shocking 11 confirmed shootings in Surrey, British Columbia, this year alone.
SPS Sgt. Tige Pollock revealed this news during an interview with 1130 NewsRadio, emphasizing that the videos are designed to prevent citizens from becoming embroiled in these dangerous activities. “The message is simple: don’t take the risk. If you are approached, say no and contact the police,” Pollock stressed.
The videos are now available on the SPS YouTube page, and authorities are urging the community to spread the word. Pollock highlighted the severe repercussions of participating in extortion, stating, “There is a risk of getting arrested, deported, or even getting injured.”
This campaign is a significant step as the federal government has also deployed 20 additional officers to tackle the alarming extortion crisis in British Columbia. The situation has escalated to the point where the City of Surrey has motioned for a federal declaration of a state of emergency regarding extortion activities.
In a community grappling with fear, the police are taking a proactive stance against these crimes. Residents are encouraged to be vigilant and report any suspicious approaches. The call to action is clear: “Walk away and contact us,” Pollock added.
The urgency of this campaign cannot be overstated. With the increasing number of extortion attempts, now is the time for Surrey residents to stay informed and protect themselves. The videos aim not only to educate but also to empower individuals to resist the temptations that come with quick money at a dangerous cost.
