TBI Investigates Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Johnson City

BREAKING: The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is urgently investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that transpired during a standoff involving Carter County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Saturday afternoon. The incident unfolded at approximately 2:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Jarrett Buck Loop Road in Johnson City, Tennessee.

According to a TBI release, deputies were dispatched to the scene following a report of vandalism. Upon arrival, they encountered a man armed with a gun who subsequently barricaded himself inside the residence. In a tense situation, deputies attempted to negotiate the man’s surrender using chemical agents and other non-lethal methods.

As the standoff escalated, the suspect fired shots at the deputies and even targeted a law enforcement drone, successfully destroying it. In a last-ditch effort to resolve the situation, deputies employed a fire department water hose to encourage the subject to exit the premises. During this critical moment, for reasons still under investigation, deputies returned fire, striking the man.

He was promptly transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers sustained injuries during this incident.

TBI agents are actively working to piece together the events that led to the shooting. This includes gathering evidence and conducting interviews with involved parties. Findings from the investigation will be shared with the district attorney general for further review and consideration.

This developing story raises significant questions about law enforcement protocols during standoffs and the use of force. The community is urged to stay updated as more information becomes available.
