Tractor-Trailer Overturns, Candy Spills on Lowell Connector

UPDATE: A tractor-trailer loaded with candy overturned on Gorham Street in Lowell, Massachusetts, shortly before 6 p.m. on October 23, 2023. The vehicle flipped onto its side at the end of the Lowell Connector, scattering candy across the road and causing significant damage to a retaining wall and nearby structures.

Witnesses reported a loud crash that shook homes in the vicinity. Local resident Megan Avery described the moment as terrifying, recalling, “It shook my house,” as she rushed outside to find the truck precariously positioned just feet from her door. Fortunately, her vehicle escaped damage.

The truck came to rest on its passenger side, exposing its 18 wheels to the rainy evening. Emergency responders reported that the vehicle was not carrying hazardous materials but confirmed it was transporting a large load of candy, including Maestro Massimo boxes. Crews worked swiftly to remove the cargo before attempting to upright the trailer.

The intersection where the crash occurred is notorious for accidents, despite numerous warning signs about the Connector’s abrupt end. Authorities have not yet disclosed how the truck ended up on its side, but tire tracks across a grassy divider indicated its path from the Connector to the retaining wall.

The incident also caused damage to a utility pole, a pedestrian traffic signal, and an exit sign. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

Local police have concluded their investigation into the crash without filing any charges. Access to Gorham Street remained blocked in both directions for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and assess the damage.

As the cleanup continues, local residents express concern over the safety of the intersection, with one commenter humorously suggesting the wall should be equipped with airbags.

Stay tuned for updates as authorities work to address the aftermath of this dramatic incident.
